Mortal Kombat X: How to Play Kotal Kahn

He who burns the sun.

Sun God

Recommended Videos

Sun God is Kotal Kahn’s first variation, and it is plenty powerful once you understand its benefits. One of the special moves held by this variation is the Sun God Choke which actually increases in power and number of attacks with each use (this stacks up to 3 times), making Kotal a scary enemy to get close to. He then has his God Ray which both damages enemies unlucky enough to stand inside its light, or heals Kotal Kahn if he does the same. This variation provides plenty of risk to the opponent while keeping Kotal Kahn in fighting shape.

Blood Offering: Forward, Down, Back, Circle

Sunstone: Down, Forward, X

God Ray: Down, Forward, Circle

Air Takedown: Down, Forward, Square

Soul Scorch: Forward, Down, Back, Square

Sun God Choke: Down, Back, Triangle

Blood God

Kotal Kahn’s Blood Totem variation provides him a group of buffs that can be summoned, as totems, mid fight. The Crystal Totem provides an attack buff, the Obsidian Totem provides a defense buff, and the Blood Totem adds a vampiric ability to any attacks landed while active, giving Kahn another method of healing on top of his God Ray. One thing players should note is that you can only have one active totem at any given time, and they only last for a handful of seconds. If you don’t mind a bit of strategy to your combat, Blood God is the perfect variation for those seeking complete control of damage output, and intake.

Blood Offering: Forward, Down, Back, Circle

Sunstone: Down, Forward, X

God Ray: Down, Forward, Circle

Air Takedown: Down, Forward, Square

Crystal Totem: Down, Back, Square

Obsidian Totem: Down, Back, Triangle

Blood Totem: Down, Back, X

War God

Kotal Kahn’s War God variation removes some of his god-like abilities in exchange for some seriously powerful melee attacks with his weapon the Macuahuitl. With this weapon, he is given both a bit of range to his physical attacks, and a bit of extra damage. If players still desire a bit of a buff they can use the Blood Offering special attack which increases damage at the cost of HP. This special is actually available to all three variations, but since the other two, Sun God and Blood God, have their own buffs it’s never really necessary. It is something to be considered when using War God though, since although he is a much more impressive close range fighter, a bit of extra power may not be asking too much when fighting well practiced opposition.

Blood Offering: Forward, Down, Back, Circle

God Ray: Down, Forward, Circle

Air Takedown: Down, Forward, Square

Saw Blade: Down, Forward, Triangle

Overhead Sword Strike: Down, Back, Square

Sword Toss: Down, Forward, X

X-Ray and Finishers

Fatalities:

X-Ray (L2+R2 with full meter)

Kotal Kahn’s X-Ray Attack is another of the fast ones, making it relatively easy to pull off, even against defensive fighters. This particular X-Ray begins with a blast of light from the sky. Kotal Kahn does a brief taunt/action when triggering which is hard to realize sometimes. If playing as Kotal Kahn, it’s best to trigger this X-Ray while your opponent is mid jump (either going up, or coming down), to ensure that they are unable to block at all. Afterwards, watch them burn.
