Square Enix announced Kingdom Hearts 2.8: Final Chapter Prologue at TGS 2015 with a trailer that also featured new footage of Kingdom Hearts III.
This new addition to the Kingdom Hearts family will include Dream Drop Distance, the cinematics of Unchained CHI, and a new chapter taking place after the events of Birth of Sleep. All of these will be fully remastered in HD, according to the trailer.
Kingdom Hearts 2.8 will be the eighth entry into the series, assuming that 2.8 is released before Kingdom Hearts III. The new chapter is being labeled as Kingdom Hearts 0.2: Birth by Sleep, with the subtitles “a fragmentary passage.” The trailer also confirms that Kingdom Hearts III is now in development.
Well, we’d hope so.
While the trailer is an exciting announcement, it could be exhausting for many fans. The remasters and reissues, including the Kingdom Hearts 1.5 and 2.5 ReMix, round out the controversially convoluted story web. Tetsuya Nomura’s epic has given splitting headaches to story analysts. Is there too much to play through in order to grasp the full story? How much is necessary to play outside of Kingdom Hearts I and II in order to comprehend III? Is it necessary, or are all the games ultimately one massive, collective sidequest?
That much remains to be seen. Until then, all there’s left is to contemplate every frame of the footage Square Enix has given us of Kingdom Hearts III and 2.8.
How much have you kept up with all the Kingdom Hearts games? Let us know in the comments.
